Glenn Nielsen and David Tyson Smith race toward the 45th District special election
The 45th House District seat wasn't supposed to be on the April ballot. Former state Rep. Kip Kendrick was re-elected to the post in November, his final term representing residents in Boone County. Kendrick, however, announced his decision to leave the position later that month, opting to join Greg Razer, D-Kansas City, as his chief of staff this year. Gov. Mike Parson called the special election Jan. 27, and Libertarian candidate Glenn Nielsen and Democratic candidate David Tyson Smith on Tuesday will vie for votes to become the 45th District state representative.

David Tyson Smith's run for office was years in the making
The Louisiana woman had stolen a wallet. Then, she was facing 20 years in prison. For David Tyson Smith, her predicament was a stark example of the impact laws can have and the importance of making sure they treat people fairly. “These laws, and especially who’s passing the laws, can totally ruin people’s lives for various reasons,” Smith said. That lesson is one reason Smith is running for Missouri state representative of House District 45, which serves Columbia and Boone County. If elected, he will replace Kip Kendrick.
